January 2012

All right, the amount of homework I have been assigned as well as the amount of training I am now doing is preventing me from actually posting a long blog post.  I will, however, catch up on my pics a day for January.

Amazing Mondays

Well, another Monday gone by.  This is my last Monday with no school at this juncture.  I kind of enjoyed it.  I helped Matthew with his school and then we went and played with the most precious little girls, they are 4 and 2.  Matthew took a break from his school work to let them dress him up and chase him around, HA!  I have such an awesome son.

I will say this about my precious little man (who will soon be bigger than me).  He is really tolerant and patient.  He lets these little ones that I care for chase him around and even catch him from time to time.  He lets them dress him up or push him down or crawl on him or any number of other things and just laughs!

How is it that I am so blessed?  I believe it is because I have not kept him away from others of different ages.  I have not enforced the societal requirement that children must only play with those their age.  I believe that it is important for children to know how to play with others, regardless of age.  This means learning acceptable ways to play with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, etc...  This will enable them, as adults, to tolerate and work well with people of all maturity levels.

I am proud of him...  For my picture and haiku of the day I will be featuring Matthew and a couple of really cute little girls...

Reading, lazy?

I find it interesting that this turned into such a lazy day.  My son, who is an avid reader anyway, chose to read all day, and I must say that I have done much of the same.  Funny thing is, though, that reading isn't actually the lazy thing to do.

Why do we call it a lazy day when we do nothing but read all day?  I understand the concept of not getting house work or yard work or any other kind of "work" done, but this does not define us as lazy.  Reading actively engages our minds as we paint a picture, often vivid, of what is being described in the book.  The brain is a muscle and when we read, we are exercising said muscle and keeping it sharp, as well as teaching it to focus.  Not to mention that we are engaging both hemispheres of our brain.  How many activities do that?

Not only does this engage our brain on a physical level, but the act of reading, even for pleasure, engages our mental capacity.  We are often exposed to different literary styles, new words, idioms, phrases, and learn how they can be used in different ways.  In fact, my son and I keep a dictionary handy where we read so that if we run across a word we don't know, or haven't heard or read before, we can look it up at the end of the chapter, rather than forgetting about it by the end of the book.

By continuing to read (on lazy days, etc...) and read often we are expanding our knowledge database by leaps and bounds!  If you do the research, you will find that the most successful people in this world are most often the most well read...  According to Nobel Peace Prize winner and former President of Israel,
"Your best friends are not only people, but books.  To read books is like going to swim in a sea of wisdom, endlessly fascinating.  And there are so many wise people all over the world, throughout history, and you can have it free, for nothing.  And reading must become a daily habit.  It's not that you can read once a week.  I read day in and day out, and you make acquaintances with books.  After a few pages, you know with whom you are reading.  Serious, unserious, far-sighted, repetitive."

Ok, so we have established many positives, now, about taking some time to "be lazy" and read.  The best part, in my humble opinion, is the creativity that is sparked by reading tenaciously.  Or even just by reading on a regular basis.  Creativity requires one to be knowledgeable in more than one area, oftentimes in several areas.  How does one acquire this knowledge?  By reading of course!  Just reading for pleasure is amazing.  You may not know what you will use this knowledge you are gaining for now, but the dots will all connect later.  You will be able to use what was read at some point in the future, it never fails.  No matter what area of life you choose to excel in, it will never hurt to be "lazy" and read.

I suppose that you all know what my conclusion is.  I hereby conclude that taking a "lazy day" to do nothing but read every now and again is not a bad thing, in fact, I think I might just recommend it.  Especially for those of you who might be overly stressed or medically having difficulties, I forgot to mention that reading can also be an extremely healthy form of escapism from time to time.

I hope this finds you all well!

And now for my daily photo and haiku...

Professionalism

As Matthew bathes, I am sitting here contemplating what exactly professionalism is.  Is it wearing make-up?  Dressing nicer than we would normally?  Is it a behavior?  A way of speech?  A type of education?

I am in school to get my bachelor's in the Science of Elementary Education at Faulkner University.  (Yes, yes, I am due to get my BS at FU in 2013 after the world is supposed to end, now that we've all had a good laugh can we get back to professionalism?)

The longer I am in school and the more classes focused on my major I take, the more I hear about how we are supposed to be professionals and look the part.  This brings me to the question, what exactly is professionalism?

Even Webster's is vague, it say that professionalism is the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.  So let's break it down.

Conduct is behavior.  We are graded on it from the time we start school all the way through adulthood and it is even monitored in the nursing homes and assisted living communities.  So no pressure or anything.  Professional conduct, I would think, would be conduct that reflects well, not only on you, but also on your chosen profession.  As a construction worker, I would imagine that your "professional conduct" would have a lot to do with the way you handle tools, heavy machinery, and the way you handle safety precautions.  As a soon-to-be teacher, I would imagine that professional conduct would run the gamut from appropriate interaction with administrators to appropriate interaction with parents to the interaction with the children, all of which would be different kinds of interaction.  Running from patience, to deference, to being firm but gentle, to calm, to calming...  Whew, can you imagine all the different ways one must conduct one's self to be considered a professional teacher?

Aims.  What are aims?  I would define aims, in this context, to be akin to goals.  What goals might each profession have?  Well, I would imagine the goals of a "professional" teacher to range from having a good working relationship with ones coworkers and administrators, to having a good open relationship with the parents, to getting the students taught what they need to know throughout the year as well as loving the students, I could go on.

Qualities.  Let's see.  What qualities would be considered professional?  Qualities is rather a vague term.  This could mean anything!  Is a quality something related to character?  Is it something related to the way one speaks?  Is it related to the way one presents one's self?  Or what about the way one dresses or is made up using make up?  I would argue that qualities is an all encompassing word that is used to describe all of these "qualities".

How does one dress professionally?  Well, this would be considered a subjective thing.  Each profession has it's own dress code.  On a job site, construction workers dress professionally in a hard hat and clothes that can get dirty.  A worker on the road would have to wear a bright reflective vest.  Police officers and firefighters have uniforms.  Teachers must have some kind of dress code.  Yes, there is a dress code for teachers and it involves slacks and or skirts or dresses for ladies as well as a "nice" top.  For gentleman teachers, this would include nice slacks as well as a "dress shirt" and maybe even a tie.

So, to sum up, professionalism is not just dressing nice or wearing make up.  It is knowing how to behave appropriately with a wide variety of people as well as setting or having goals set for you that must be met in order to further the profession in question.  All of this is what is expected of professionals, I can do it, can you?

And now for the daily picture with haiku...

In The Ghetto...

As I sit and contemplate what I will write about today, I think back on what I have done in the last 8 hours or so.  My son is sitting on his bohonkas playing a handheld video game after playing football with the neighborhood boys for about an hour.  I, on the other hand, have just returned from a bike ride upon which I saw many things and people whilst riding to and from a place my friend is considering renting.

As I prepared to ride over to this place in Cloverdale, I looked up on Googlemaps how to get there.  I was unsure of this route I had been given, but figured it couldn't be too bad.  I left the house.

As I followed the instructions given to me by this online navigator I began to reflect on the day.

It had been a good day.  Matthew and I had finished the movie Anchors Away this morning while eating breakfast and had a really good conversation about Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly.  He really loves the old stuff.  After that I had taken him for a jog around downtown.  He had really enjoyed that.  We went around downtown a little and then up the tower by the newspaper offices and then across the bridge over the train tracks and down to the river front.  We ran around the river front and looked at the cool tile mosaic up by the splashpad.  Then we had jogged home.  I had fed him lunch and then he had gone to play football with his friends.  Overall it had been a good day.

As I was thinking on these things, I realized that I was going through some neighborhoods that were...  Well, questionable.  Now, I am a pretty friendly person, so rather than assume things about those out on the roads or in front of houses or in groups, I decided to be friendly and say hey as I passed them by.  The first few I was a little nervous about because they looked like the stereotypical "thugs", but everyone likes a smile right?  You know, they waved right back and said how you doin'!  This only encouraged me.  I started waving and saying hey to everyone I passed, like a little kid on a float in a parade I was waving and smiling to all who saw me.  HA!  Some of the looks I got were priceless!  The ghetto area didn't last long, maybe a quarter mile, but it was so much fun that I continued to do this all the way to my destination.

What fun to pass smiles along to folks who may not have many smiles given to them.  I think I shall do that more often and encourage my son to do the same.

Now for my photo and haiku of the day...

Have a great one all!!

Photo and Haiku for the 1st day of a new year

Ok, So I am determined to see beauty in every day and every moment and be thankful no matter what for whatever comes along.  Therefore, with each daily post I will be uploading a picture and an accompanying Haiku.  Since I already posted today's blog entry, here is the photo and haiku of the day for January 1, 2012.

A New Gregorian Year...

The New Year.

Why do we capitalize each word in that sentence?  Perhaps it is a way to show that we will capitalize on the new opportunities afforded us with the beginning of a new year.  Perhaps it is just out of habit.

Either way, the beginning of a new year signifies to our human anatomies that something new is here.  That we have a chance to start anew, a chance to make things right, or do things differently.  How many of us actually take the opportunity afforded us to start anew and stick with it?  How many of us make a resolution, that we know we could not possibly keep, that isn't realistic in the least, thinking that since we have a year to accomplish it we might could, only to get overwhelmed at the prospect and break it shortly after the year begins and then have loads of guilt pile onto us, by our own selves!

Webster says that resolution is

: the act or process of resolving: as
a : the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones
b : the act of answering : solving
c : the act of determining
d : the passing of a voice part from a dissonant to a consonant tone or the progression of a chord from dissonance to consonance
e : the separating of a chemical compound or mixture into its constituents
f (1) : the division of a prosodic element into its component parts (2) : the substitution in Greek or Latin prosody of two short syllables for a long syllable
g : the analysis of a vector into two or more vectors of which it is the sum

Therefore, it is my conclusion that we have been using the word resolution wrong for a very long time, each and every year!  Even if we were using it correctly, it would be useless, as we do not tend to keep our resolutions much past the month of March anyway, life tends to get in the way...

As of now I will cease and desist from making New Year's Resolutions, and will begin setting goals for each new Gregorian Year.  I had already set goals for the Hebrew/Israeli new year and so now I will put forth my goals for this upcoming Gregorian new year.

By March 2012 I will...

Put on that wet suit and JUST JUMP IN.
Swim an entire half mile in open water freestyle!
Run 6 miles no stopping to walk.
Ride 25 miles.
Wear makeup 3 times a week.

Have you any goals?
