A New Gregorian Year...

The New Year.

Why do we capitalize each word in that sentence?  Perhaps it is a way to show that we will capitalize on the new opportunities afforded us with the beginning of a new year.  Perhaps it is just out of habit.

Either way, the beginning of a new year signifies to our human anatomies that something new is here.  That we have a chance to start anew, a chance to make things right, or do things differently.  How many of us actually take the opportunity afforded us to start anew and stick with it?  How many of us make a resolution, that we know we could not possibly keep, that isn't realistic in the least, thinking that since we have a year to accomplish it we might could, only to get overwhelmed at the prospect and break it shortly after the year begins and then have loads of guilt pile onto us, by our own selves!

Webster says that resolution is

: the act or process of resolving: as
a : the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones
b : the act of answering : solving
c : the act of determining
d : the passing of a voice part from a dissonant to a consonant tone or the progression of a chord from dissonance to consonance
e : the separating of a chemical compound or mixture into its constituents
f (1) : the division of a prosodic element into its component parts (2) : the substitution in Greek or Latin prosody of two short syllables for a long syllable
g : the analysis of a vector into two or more vectors of which it is the sum

Therefore, it is my conclusion that we have been using the word resolution wrong for a very long time, each and every year!  Even if we were using it correctly, it would be useless, as we do not tend to keep our resolutions much past the month of March anyway, life tends to get in the way...

As of now I will cease and desist from making New Year's Resolutions, and will begin setting goals for each new Gregorian Year.  I had already set goals for the Hebrew/Israeli new year and so now I will put forth my goals for this upcoming Gregorian new year.

By March 2012 I will...

Put on that wet suit and JUST JUMP IN.
Swim an entire half mile in open water freestyle!
Run 6 miles no stopping to walk.
Ride 25 miles.
Wear makeup 3 times a week.

Have you any goals?
